The fact that most Latin Americans live in Southwark and Lambeth in London is probably well know to Londoners. However this visualisation reveals other trends such as most Brazilians differentiating themselves from the rest of the Latin American community by their concentration in Tower Hamlets and other facts.
This map presents the opportunity to interact with different nationalities and their predominant locations in the great city of London.
As a multicultural city London has China Town as a main concentration of the Chinese population and Tower Hamlets as a main concentration of the Bangladeshi nationals. Elephant and Castle is the emblem of Latin Americans in London and has been for many years.
There is not a definite record in history of why Latin Americans have chosen Southwark and Lambeth as their preferred choice for immigration to London; a phenomenon that has been happening in modern times since the 70s. However the main reason why Latin Americans come to UK is because of family and friends already being settled and them being a main connection to a job.
Another interesting trend that this visualisation reveals is that most Ecuatorians are based in Newham after Southwark. In fact the numbers are almost the same. Also other Latin American nationalities are equally distributed between Southwark, Lambeth and Hackney.
This visualisation has used the data produced from a survey of 1000 Latin Americans done in London as part of the study done by Queen Mary: ‘No Longer Invisible’. This report revealed that at least 186,500 Latin Americans live in the UK and that 61 per cent of them reside in London.
